Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms are vital for ensuring the safety of homes, as they provide an essential early warning system in the event of a fire, allowing occupants to escape safely. In fact, smoke alarms reduce the risk of fire-related fatalities by nearly 50%.

By 1 January 2027, all private homes, townhouses, and units need interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. If you have a registered caravan or motorhome, you’ll also need a photoelectric smoke alarm there.

The law also states that all smoke alarms must meet Australian Standard AS3786-2014. If your current smoke alarms are old, broken, or you’re turning your home into a rental, they need to be replaced with interconnected alarms.

  • Be photoelectric (no ionisation sensors).
  • Connect to each other so if one goes off, they all go off.
  • Meet AS3786-2014—you can check this on the alarm itself (you might need to remove it from the bracket to see it).
  • Be hardwired by a licensed electrician (with mains power + backup battery) or be a 10-year battery-operated photoelectric alarm that you can install yourself.
  • A smoke alarm should be on every level of the home.
  • There should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom.
  • There should be a smoke alarm in every hallway that connect bedrooms to the rest of the house.
